Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April 1972. Being a single girl, she was raised also by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a graduate of her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. She took secondary school classes the course of two years while also working. She hoped to become a teacher of English at a secondary school. After three years of being teacher's assistant and studying her goal to become a high school English teacher came to a halt. She began her career by doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. In the end, she teamed up along with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. At the Roots performance, she announced herself as an artist. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She also gained experience in performing during the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. Also, she was the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
